KARACHI, July 20: The ongoing monsoon rains have brought relief to farmers, played havoc with the inhabitants of urban areas, but proved to be a blessing in disguise for builders associated with construction of roads.

Almost all the major thoroughfares as well as the recently constructed flyovers have been damaged by the recent downpours. The weather pundits say it was also possible that till late August the province may receive intermittent rains.

Some inquiries from people revealed that prior to the monsoon rains it had been a practice of some vested groups to allegedly break the water pipelines along the newly constructed roads so that they could damage the road by leaking water and get fresh tenders for renovation and repair of roads from the concerned department.

The rains have made things more easier for road constructors as none of the roads has been left safe and needed renovation and even complete re-building in some cases due to one or two feet deep potholes.

According to provincial government officials, tenders were expected to be floated in the middle of August or later to reconstruct these roads, which were damaged by the rains.

The reconstruction work costs millions of rupees that could be saved, if the planners had taken measures for proper drainage facility along the roads.—APP
