ABU GHARIB (Iraq), July 12: At least one US soldier was killed and another was injured on Saturday in three separate incidents targeting the US forces in Iraq.

An improvised explosive device blew up, lightly wounding a US soldier early Saturday at the Abu Gharib prison west of Baghdad, a US military source said.

The blast ripped away a section of the prison’s perimeter wall and tore a hole in the ground.

A coalition spokeswoman, Sergeant Nicole Thompson, had no details about the blast at Abu Gharib, but said military police reported three bursts of gunfire by the prison west of Baghdad early Saturday.

A US soldier has died of gunshot wounds in a non-combat incident north of Baghdad, military spokesman Specialist Giovanni Lorente said.

The soldier was hurt, along with one other member of the Fourth Infantry Division, and both had been evacuated to a field hospital, Lorente said. No further details were available.

Meanwhile, a US army patrol came under fire on the outskirts of Fallujah on Friday night, an AFP correspondent reported.—AFP
