Sanitary conditions worsen

LARKANA, July 12: The caving in of the main line of the sewerage system at two places on Bakrani Road has further aggravated the sanitary conditions in Larkana, where a PPP-backed Taluka Nazim holds the reins of the Taluka municipal administration.

A 3.5-ft-wide pipeline carries the sewage of the city. It was laid in the 70s and has now been wornout. The flowing sewage has badly damaged the road as a result of which it has become extremely difficult for vehicles to move on it.

The Taluka Nazim, Larkana, Nazeer Shaikh, told this correspondent on Saturday that the pipeline had completed its life and had started rusting and eroding at various places.

He said that there was no way a 3.5-ft-wide pipeline could withstand the pressure of three sewage channels of 8.5 feet which passed just above it, and added that it was natural that it would cave in under the weight.

He said the repair work had begun on both the damaged portions and it would take at least three days more to make it fully functional.

The municipal administration had made temporary arrangements to drain out the sewage by installing de-watering pumps.

The Taluka Nazim said that the municipal staff late Friday night dismantled two shops which fell in the path of the main pipeline to avert any mishap.

INEFFECTIVE: The efforts of the Taluka Council to remove the stagnant water from the roads, streets and lanes proved to be ineffective as it still remains there, while the gutters continue overflowing.
