Bangladesh gain upper hand in Test warmup

DARWIN (Australia), July 10: Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud and Mashrafe bin Mortaza each took three wickets to help bowl a Northern Territory Chief Minister’s XI out for 189 on Thursday.

Uncapped Australian batsman Michael Clarke hit a defiant 79 but Bangladesh, with Mahmud taking 3-43 and Mortaza 3-28, dominated the opening day of the four-day tour match.

“They bowled very well. They have got a very consistent bowling attack and I thought they bowled to their strengths,” New South Wales batsman Clarke, who won the toss and elected to bat, told reporters.

The 22-year-old, who has five One-day International caps and is seen as a future Test player, hit nine boundaries and faced 152 balls.

Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore said he was pleased to bowl the home side out for 189, but warned: “It’s going to be difficult to get those runs.”

Bangladesh, who have lost 18 and drawn one of their 19 Test appearances, will play Australia in a two-Test series starting next week in Darwin.
