ISLAMABAD, July 8: The opposition parties have decided to bring no-confidence motions against Rawalpindi District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani and Tehsil Nazim Hamid Nawaz within two weeks for their alleged “corruption and inefficiency”, an opposition MNA disclosed on Monday.

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal MNA, Mohammad Hanif Abbasi, while talking to Dawn at the Parliament House here on Monday, said the motions would be filed within next 15 days.

The MNA said that the decision to bring no-confidence motions against the two Nazims was taken at a meeting of the opposition members held recently at his residence.

Mr Abbasi said the meeting was attended by members of National and provincial assemblies and others belonging to People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League (N), MMA and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf.

He said the opposition wanted to bring the motions much earlier but it had to wait due to a law under which no such motions could be bring against any elected district government representative by June 30. “Since the deadline is over, we have decided to bring the motions”, he said.

Mr Abbasi said the opposition was bringing the motions as it believed that the district government had totally failed to deliver. He said its past performance was pathetic and the opposition wanted to remove the district and Tehsil Nazims due to their inefficiency and corruption.

He alleged that both the Nazims on various occasion “misused” their powers and thus committed corruption. He said the civic conditions of the Rawalpindi city had worsened due to the inefficient local administration.

On chances of the success, Mr Abbassi said the motions would be “cent per cent successful” as simple majority was needed to oust them.

He said the opposition parties had the required number of councillors to oust the Nazims.

On procedure of moving the motions, he said under the laws, a Nazim would be disqualified if majority of the members just filed the motion and there was no need of debate.

He said the decision to bring no-confidence motions had been taken after thoroughly reviewing the performance of the district and Tehsil Nazims.

When asked as to who will be next candidates, he said the opposition parties would decide about it within few days. He expressed the hope that the opposition parties would bring consensus candidates for the two posts.
