GUJRANWALA, July 7: The Punjab government has enhanced compensation money for heirs of slain police from Rs300,000 to Rs500,000 besides the provision of free residence, employment in police department and facilities of education and health.

This was given out by Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi while speaking at an award-giving ceremony for heirs of police martyrs at Muhammad Ashraf Marth Police Line here on Sunday night.

The chief minister paid homage to those officials of the range police who had sacrificed their lives for the protection of lives and properties of the people.

He said the real award would be given to them by Allah, but the government would compensate their heirs by providing them with better facilities, including the provision of residence.

Virtually, the government was considering to provide the housing facility to every government official after retirement.

He suggested that police officials should change the ‘thana culture’ so that the criminals and terrorism could be eliminated in the country.

Range DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal told the Punjab chief minister that about 13 police officials had sacrificed their lives during encounters with outlaws and killed 38 POs and arrested 42 others.

IGP Syed Masood Ahmad Shah, MPAs Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan, MNAs, MPAs, Nazims and office bearers of the local chamber of commerce and industry were also present on the occasion.

BOOKED: An SHO and six other policemen were booked on Monday on the charge of torturing and fracturing a leg of the former Naushera Virkan municipality chairman during his arrest.

Chaudhry Wazir Ali, involved in a criminal case, was present at his filling station when SHO Muhammad Nawaz along with his staff raided there, manhandled him severely and fractured his leg. He moved the Lahore High Court when Naushera Virkan police refused to register a case against their colleagues.

On the directives of the LHC, the case has been registered against the then Naushera Virkan SHO Nawaz, ASI Muhammad Mansha, headconstable Nasir Ahmad and constables Muddasar Iqbal, Riasat Ali and three citizens — Muhammad Awais, Jamil Ahmad and Raza Ali.

CAUGHT: A joint team of the surveillance and military intelligence raided the small industrial estate No 1 and caught three factory owners red-handed while stealing electricity here on Monday.

Faisal Aslam was not only stealing power supply for his own factory, but was also supplying electricity to two other neighbouring factories. On a tip-off, Gepco chief executive Brig Saifullah Khalid formed the joint team for conducting a raid. The raiding party removed the meters of these factories and got registered FIRs against them.

KILLED: A sanitary worker of the Wasa lost his life after falling into a disposal work in Peoples Colony here on Monday.

Yousaf Masih was cleaning the disposal work when he slipped and fell into it. He drowned before any help could be provided to him. His body was recovered and handed over to his heirs.

Meanwhile, the sanitary workers association demanded that compensation should be given to heirs of the deceased.

COMPLETED: The Wapda has completed around 41 renovation work in Wazirabad division with an expenditure of Rs6 million while two dozen more would be completed at a cost of Rs3.2 million within the stipulated period.

This was stated by Gepco chief executive Brig Saifullah Khalid while speaking at an open kutchery in Wazirabad on Monday.

The Gepco chief executive transferred line superintendent Muhammad Siddique instantly on a consumer’s complaint. He warned that inefficient and corrupt officials would not be spared and would be taken to task if found guilty in an inquiry.

Senior officers of Gepco, Wazirabad XEN and SDOs were also present on the occasion.
