HYDERABAD, July 6: Opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmad Khuhro has said the people of Sindh will continue their struggle against the greater Thal canal project till the controversial project is shelved.

The convener of the Anti-Thal Canal Action Committee was speaking at different roadside public meetings in Hatri, Matiari and other towns of Hyderabad district on Sunday. He was going to Sukkur in a ATCAC motorcade which marked the beginning of third phase of the ATCAC movement against the Thal canal construction.

Mr Khuhro ridiculed the claim of the rulers that millions of rupees had been spent on construction of the canal, saying that 40 million people of Sindh were prepared to donate Rs10 each to the rulers to account for the money that was spent on the project.

The Sindh People’s Party Parliamentarian chief condemned the recent statement of Federal Water and Power Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on the water issue and also criticized leaders maintaining silence on the rights of Sindh, terming them traitors.

He said the parties united against the rulers would continue their struggle till injustices against Sindh were stopped.

He said leaders of the action committee were prepared to sacrifice their lives and fill prisons but they would not give up their protest till the Thal canal project was permanently shelved.

Leaders of other political, religious and nationalist parties, affiliated with the action committee, also demanded that work on the canal project should be stopped.

They said it was a conspiracy against Sindh and pledged to continue their protest against the Thal canal and for the rights of the province.

Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo said huge protest demonstrations against the project, despite heavy rains and storms, had proved that there was no turning back.

Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said Sindh was the motherland of Sindhi people and the River Indus was their identity.

Others who spoke at the gatherings included Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F leader Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, Sindh National Front leader Gul Mohammad Jakhrani, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Afzal Gujjar and Jamaat-i-Islami leader Abdul Hafiz Bijarani.

Earlier, the motorcade of the action committee leaders started from the residence of PPP leader Amir Ali Shah Jamote in Latifabad while it was heavily raining. The leaders will stay for the night in Nawabshah from where they will resume their journey on Monday.
