KARACHI, July 2: Liaquatabad Town on Wednesday announced a Rs 263.457 million budget for the fiscal 2003-04, incorporating a development outlay of Rs 116.051m which comes to 44.05 per cent of the total size of the budget.

Briefing the newsmen about the salient features of the budget, Nazim Dr Pervaiz Mehmood, said the town’s income has been projected at Rs263.457m as against total expenditures of Rs263.197m, showing a negligible surplus of Rs0.260m.

The sources of income include matching grant’s share from the city government amounting to Rs 160m, share from property tax (Rs40m), conservancy tax share (Rs20m), share from some other taxes (Rs40m), plant charges (Rs1m), water charges recovery from contractors (Rs0.500m), income from other sources (Rs1.194m), road cutting charges (Rs0.500m) and income from gymnasium, licence fee and marriage gardens (Rs0236m).

About the non-development expenditures, he said that a total of Rs147.146m (55.85 per cent) have been earmarked.

Of the total non-developmental expenditure, Rs121.729m (46.20 per cent) have been allocated for establishment, Rs20.497m (7.78 per cent) for contingencies and Rs 4.920m under the head of maintenance.

Giving a break-up of the service-wise expenditure, Dr Mehmood said Rs82.345m have been allocated for sanitation; Rs53.084m for communication; Rs51.530 for development of parks and recreation; Rs25.600m for electrical and mechanical works, Rs45.258m for municipal services and Rs5.380m for libraries.

Referring to the Town’s upliftment plans, he said that Rs38.280 million have been earmarked for construction and repairs of roads and footpaths; Rs31.600 million for construction of parks, playgrounds and nurseries; Rs25.600 million for the improvement and maintenance of street-lights; Rs2.200 million for construction and improvement of storm-water drains; Rs11.150 million for buildings; Rs3.221 million for purchasing computers, furniture and other equipment and another Rs4 million has been kept under the head of unforeseen/fund and liabilities.
