SKARDU, June 30: Hundreds of school students and some senior citizens belonging to the Shia community here on Sunday staged a protest rally against a committee constituted by the Northern Areas administration to review the Islamiat curriculum.

The protesters marched from the school chowk to Jamia mosque chanting slogans and demanding the inclusion of a Shia leader in the committee in order to introduce non-controversial syllabus in the textbooks in Northern Areas.

Addressing a large gathering Shaikh Nisar Hussain Sarbug said that the Northern Areas administration had constituted a three-member committee to design Islamiat curriculum in which Shia leaders were ignored.

“We would continue our agitation in the leadership of Agha Ziauddin Rizvi until our demands are met with,” he said.

Syed Mehdi Shah, Shaikh Shabbir Sharifi and Shaikh Bashir also addressed the rally.

FREE RATION: President Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Professor Dr Yasmeen Rashid has announced a three-month free ration to the 286 affected families of Frano village of Sheoke sector who had left their homes in the wake of heavy Indian shelling on June 4.

She said this while speaking to the affected families at Tungoo Kheema Basti 24km from the Khaplu.

Ms Yasmeen also announced to provide free medicines to the affected families and to send a team of doctors for regular monitoring of health of the families in Kheema Basti.

Deputy Commissioner Ghanche Fida Hussain on the occasion informed about the steps taken for the displaced families of Frano and Siari villages.

Meanwhile a meeting was held at the DHQ Hospital Skardu to review the relief works for the affected people of village Frano and Siari of Sheoke sector.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioner Ghangche Fida Hussain, Medical Superintendent of the hospital Col Sajid Faroque and Social Welfare Officer Ghulam Nabi.

The deputy commissioner informed the meeting about the on-going relief works being carried out for the affected families at Tungoo village.

He said that a committee had been constituted for relief works and to distribute ration among the families.

He assured the meeting that the district administration was looking after the displaced families under his supervision.
