KINGSTON (Jamaica), June 29: A seven-wicket burst by West Indies fast bowler Corey Collymore helped dismiss Sri Lanka for 194 before lunch on the third day of the second and final Test on Sunday.
The hosts have two and a half days to score the 212 runs they need to seal a series-winning victory. But they lost Chris Gayle for a duck to reach lunch at 20 for one.
Collymore had reason to celebrate after being recalled to the side for the first Test last week, four years after his only previous Test appearance.
His figures of seven for 57, the best by a West Indies bowler since Courtney Walsh took seven for 37 against New Zealand in 1995, followed his two for 28 in the first innings and five for 67 in the drawn first Test against Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka resumed on 129 for five, with skipper Hashan Tillekeratne on two and Kumar Dharmasena on nine.
Collymore made an early breakthrough by clean bowling Tillekeratne (seven) in spectacular fashion.
Chaminda Vaas chose attack as the best form of defence, and stroked four boundaries in a brisk 21, but he lost his partner when Dharmasena, on 20, edged Collymore to Brian Lara at slip.
Vaas quickly went the same way, edging Collymore for Lara to take another low diving catch, then Muttiah Muralitharan (six) skied Collymore to Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Thilan Thusara Mirando and last man Prabath Nissanka frustrated West Indies for half and hour, until Collymore finished his morning’s work by dismissing Mirando thanks to another Lara catch.
It was also Collymore who made the crucial early breakthroughs when Sri Lanka began their second innings after tea on Saturday.
He trapped Sanath Jayasuriya lbw for 13 with an outswinging delivery, then had Kumar Sangakkara (12) caught behind.
Collymore was amply backed up by the aggression of 19- year-old Jerome Taylor, who took his first two Test wickets, and debutant Fidel Edwards, who added the wicket of Romesh Kaluwitharana (23) to his first-innings haul of five for 36.
Mahela Jayawardene’s 32 made him Sri Lanka’s top-scorer in the second innings as the Sabina Park wicket continued to reward the aggressive bowling of the new-look West Indies attack.
On Saturday, Sri Lanka dominated the first two sessions of the second day’s play and started their second innings with a 17-run lead after dismissing the West Indies for just 191, with Nissanka leading the attack with five wickets for 64.
Pace bowler Nissanka had posted a career-best figures to help Sri Lanka dismiss the West Indies in just 52.4 overs.
West Indies made a bright start after resuming on four without loss before off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan rocked the home side by dismissing Brian Lara lbw for 10 before lunch.
Lara lashed Muralitharan’s first ball through the covers for four but was then trapped in front in the next over by the Sri Lankan’s “doosra”, a delivery which zipped back towards his leg stump.
Openers Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds dealt uneasily with the lively swing and seam attack of Chaminda Vaas and Test debutant Mirando when play began.
Nissanka entered the fray and immediately troubled the left handers with his pace.
Gayle reached 31 when he misjudged a rising delivery and let the ball glance off his handle for a gully catch.
Hinds soon followed, caught behind for 19 flashing at a widish delivery.
Vaas made the next breakthrough, dismissing Ramneresh Sarwan for 31 when he was bowled moving too far across the ball.
Omari Banks was caught for two edging an extravagant cut attempt to Tillekeratne at slip.
Marlon Samuels (14) was dismissed in identical circumstances and left the field with his team in trouble on 123 for six.
Ridley Jacobs and Vasbert Drakes added 39 for the seventh wicket with Drakes thumping five boundaries, including two fine sweeps off Muralitharan.
Jacobs (16) was then undone by a swirling Muralitharan delivery that caught the top of the batsman’s pad as he tried to scramble backwards for room.
Jerome Taylor (1) did little to justify his promotion to the number nine slot and his cover drive off Kumar Dharmasena was easily caught. Drakes was finally bowled by Muralitharan for 30.
