France and Russia claim honours


FLORENCE (Italy), June 23: France won its first European Cup men’s title on Sunday as defending champions and overnight leaders Britain slipped back into third place behind Germany.

Russia’s women maintained their series of victories that stretches back to 1997, comfortably defeating Germany, while France finished third.

The French men, who started the second day of competition in second place, quickly seized the lead.

110m hurdler Ladji Doucoure gave them the perfect start, winning his final in 13.55 seconds, just ahead of Germany’s Mike Fenner.

Doucoure’s compatriots Fouad Chouki and Florent Lacasse maintained France’s momentum with impressive performances in the 3000m and 800m respectively.

Victory in the closing 4x400m relay and a second place by 200m runner Christian Malcolm provided the bright spots of the day for the defending champions.

Malcolm clocked a season’s best of 20.45 in finishing second behind reigning Olympic, world and European champion Konstantinos Kederis of Greece.

Russia wrapped up the title in style in the final event of the day, clocking three minutes 26.02 to win the 4x400m relay.

GREENE PULLS OUT


PALO ALTO (California): A hobbling Maurice Greene pulled out of the men’s 200 metres final but Kelli White and teenage prodigy Allyson Felix realised their dreams in the women’s race at the US championships on Sunday.

Three times world champion Gail Devers, 36, also qualified for the world championships in Paris in August, winning the women’s 100 metres hurdles in 12.61 seconds.
