Rao hints at relief package for tenants

OKARA, June 21: Defence minister Rao Sikander Iqbal said on Saturday that the tenants on military farms could not be granted the ownership rights. However, he hinted at a possible relief package for tenants by saying that “I will not disappoint the tenants as they are part of my constituency”.

He was speaking at a District Bar association meeting in Quaid-i-Azam Hall after granting a cheque for Rs500,000 to DBA president Advocate Shaikh Najamus Saqib and announcing another grant of Rs100,000 for the Bar.

He said that Patriots would favour the speaker of National Assembly in case of a no-confidence move against him.

He disclosed that Okara had received Rs70 million of the Rs150 million announced for it by the prime minister during his visit to the area two months ago and would get the remaining amount within 15 days.

He said that President Pervaiz Musharraf would announce establishment of a cadet college in Okara after his return from abroad.

SHOT DEAD: A man shot dead his wife at 15/D in Deepalpur, according to the Sadar (Deepalpur) police.

Liaqat Ali, a drug-addict, had brought back his wife, Shahnaz Bibi, to his home just a month ago after nine years of estrangement.

The police have registered a case against the accused.

SUICIDE: A runaway teenager took poison to end his life when his father forced him to go home.

Riaz, aged 14, son of Hanif of Basti Patrol Pump in Basirpur, had run away from his house three months ago. His father had found him at a village fair.
