Wajid, Umar move into quarterfinals

LAHORE, June 19: National champion Wajid Ali and Umar Zeeshan cruised into the quarterfinals of the sixth Ameer Abdullah Khan Rokri ranking badminton cup tournament at New Khan Sports Hall on Thursday.

Besides them, five others also qualified for the last eight stage. The eighth and final place was to be decided later on Thursday night as the match between Zafar Tasneem of Wapda and New Khan’s Shabbar was in progress  at the time of filing this report.

All the winners registered straight two set wins.

Wajid brushed aside his Wapda colleague Faisal Afzal 15-7, 15-10.

New Khan’s Umar Zeeshan, Pakistan No 2, blasted Bilal of Railways 15-6, 15-5.

Aamir Islam of Wapda also earned an easy 15-7, 15-9 win over Fata’s Irfan Afridi.

Ex-champion Ali Yar Baig made it  to the last eight defeating Shafique Chaudhary 15-8, 15-10.

Ahsan Qamar (PIA) beat Rizwan Rana (New Khan) 17-16, 15-7; Waqas Ahmed (Wapda) beat Atif Nadeem (Railways) 15-7, 15-6; Ali Yar Baig (ABL) beat Shafique Chaudhary (Wapda) 15-8, 15-10; Aamir Islam (Wapda) beat Irfan Afridi (Fata) 15-7, 15-9; Umar Zeeshan (New Khan) beat Bilal (Railways) 15-6, 15-5; Wajid Ali (Wapda) beat Faisal Afzal (Wapda) 15-7, 15-10; Mohammad Atiq (New Khan) beat Ashraf Masih (PTCL) 15-12, 15-8.
