Rs2.7m distributed among M-I project victims

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, June 17: Federal Minister for Communications Ahmed Ali visited the under-construction Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1) on Tuesday to review the pace of work, and distributed cheques for Rs2.7 million among 103 sub-contractors and their employees who worked with Bayindir — a former contractor of the project.

Chairman National Highway Authority Maj-Gen Farrukh Javed and senior officers of the ministry of communications and the National Highway Authority were also present.

The minister said construction activities on the motorway had been re-started and the road would be completed as per international standards, like that of the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway.

He said M-1 would pave the way for promotion of inter- provincial harmony, adding that for the first time in the history of the country the government was paying the liabilities to the affected people of such a foreign company which had been black- listed.

He told the affected people that the government was fully aware of their problems and every possible assistance would be provided to them. “We are political figures and have close association with the masses and have come here to distribute the cheques.”

He said unskilled local people of Attock would also be provided jobs during the course of construction of the M-1, so that they could play their role in the national development project.

Pakistani engineers, he added, had already served on this project and were able to continue their services independently.

He said all the matters relating to the tendering and awarding of contract of M-1 had been made transparent and concrete steps would be taken to cover up the delay in completion of the project. He said timely completion of the project would be ensured.

Malik Mohammad Amin, MNA, said that Mr Ahmed Ali had given approval for providing employment opportunities in the project to the local population. He said construction of the Islamabad- Peshawar Motorway would facilitate transportation of trade goods and passengers. “We have been elected by the people and it is our duty to solve their problems on a priority basis,” he added.
