KARACHI, June 16: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan has called for an inquiry into the development funds given during the last 14 years and it should be ascertained why the city problems remained unsolved despite spending such a huge amount.
He made the demand while inaugurating an 18-inch diameter water supply line in Malir here on Monday.
He said the development works done by the City Government during the last 22 months are before everyone and their positive results have started appearing.
Naimatullah said those who cannot see the development works done in the city’s nook and corner should have a look on this city with an open eye. The city government has led the city to the path of development in a short period.
“We do not indulge in statement-mongering like ministers, but have done a practical job”.
“The projects we initiated were completed and those who are unable to see the same, should see without the glasses of bias and the reality will be exposed on them.”
The Nazim also referred to the mega-projects being implemented and reiterated the determination to continue to work for the reconstruction and progress of this city.
The Nazim Malir Town, Azam Ali, lamented the attitude of the MD KWSB and said no KWSB officer was present at the inaugural ceremony.
CHEQUE DISTRIBUTION: The Nazim also presided over the 22nd ceremony of handing over cheques for Rs 50,000 and allotment orders of plots of 80 square yard among the affectees of the Lyari Expressway project.
Speaking on the occasion, Naimatullah Khan said that the shifting of population is a natural phenomenon which is continuing since the world came into existence.
He said the shifting of people in the case of Lyari Expressway project was being carried out for an important objective.
He said as a result of the shifting of allottees, a grand township, having electricity, gas, education, water supply, sewerage and other amenities was emerging fast at Hawkesbay.
The city government, he said, had embarked upon a plan to restore the public trust.
He said the allotment orders were given first and shifting process started thereafter. It is the first-ever example set in Pakistan.
Naimatullah said the city government had paid Rs 180 million to the KESC alone while other facilities of gas, water, etc., were also being provided. He said no development charges were being recovered from the people.
He informed that out of 22 schools planned for the new township, four schools have started functioning.
“We give due importance to education and are committed to increase the literacy rate in Karachi.”
The Nazim was confident that the shifting of population would help people find out new sources of earning a livelihood.
He paid rich tributes to the project director, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, and said he had carried out the task of rehabilitation of shiftees in an efficient manner.
On the occasion, Nazim Lyari Town described the Lyari Expressway Rehabilitation project, a good omen and praised the efforts being made by the LEW project director.
Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, meanwhile, said the process of allotment of plots, delivery of cheques and rehabilitation of people had been made in a transparent manner.
He said that entire procedure of allotment of plots had been carried out before the area people and the public representatives.
He said the City Nazim has set up a committee to hear complaints in this regard.
The Project Director said that so far 2,700 people had been given allotment orders and in today’s ceremony some 100 persons were being given allotment orders and cheques.
He said that some 20 per cent work on Lyari Expressway had been completed while work on the Northern Bypass was going on.
He appreciated the efforts of the City Nazim in this regard.
DAWA ACADEMY: Speaking as chief guest at a 10-day course of Islamic Orientation for secondary schools by the Dawa Academy and the Research and Development Centre, City Nazim highlighted the role of teachers in the formation of an Islamic welfare society.
The Nazim said that the teachers can bring about a revolutionary change in the society through their profession.
The Nazim also lauded the role of the Dawa Academy and assured them of his all possible cooperation, besides appreciating the role of the Research and Development Centre.
Director of Dawa Academy Dr Khalid Alvi and regional director Mahmood Ahmed Farooqui also spoke.
About 30 teachers of government and private schools are participating in the course.—APP
