KARACHI, June 12: Police shot dead an alleged bandit on Thursday, in what they described as an encounter, in Liaquatabad.

The police said that three suspects came to the shop of a junk dealer, Ferozdin, in Liaquatabad No.9 and tried to snatch cash.

When the shopkeeper resisted, the armed men shot him and tried to escape, when a police mobile intercepted them.

The police said that seeing the mobile approaching, the three suspects opened fire at the police.

The police allegedly returned the fire and killed Sohail Khan, 25, on the spot, while his two accomplices disappeared into the narrow streets of Liaquatabad.

ARRESTED: Police, on late Wednesday night, arrested three suspects, who had allegedly attempted to kill a trustee of an Imambargah in Hydri.

The police said that Syed Saghir Abid Rizvi, resident of Block-H, Street no.14, was attacked, while he was sitting outside his house during power breakdown.

The Hydri Market police post in charge, Mohsin Raza, told Dawn that Mr Rizvi was recently provided with five police guards.

The police said that a taxi (JM-2726) passed twice in front of the house, and later stopped at the end of the street and a young man came out opening fire at Mr Rizvi, who ducked and went into his house.

The police guards returned the fire, wounding the suspect, who tried to escape in the same vehicle.

The police said that as the taxi was trying to speed away, two police officials coming from the opposite direction also opened fire at the taxi breaking the wind srceen.

The taxi hit against the pavement and came to a halt, and the police arrested the three suspects and recovered three pistols from their possession and collected seven empties from the spot.

The three were identified as Ishtiaq, Qasim and Amir, who was injured.

According to the initial investigations, one of the suspect is allegedly found to be a supporter of a religious party.

Mr Rizvi is among the trustee’s of Masjid-o-Imambargah Babul Ilam and also Rabita secretary of the Jaffaria Alliance, police added.
