LAHORE, June 8: The bay English filly Laser Lass established her superiority in class by winning the Tarbela Textile Mill Cup run over 1200 metres during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.

This was the filly’s fifth victory in-a-row and the third in class I, II and III combined handicap races.

Ridden by her regular partner in the saddle, jockey Salah-ud- Din (II), Laser Lass’ fight turned out to be not much of a battle at all.

She rallied from the rails into the home stretch to gain the advantage and defeated Gambling Girl by seven lengths easily. Fair Play finished third while Feel The Freedom completed the frame among 12 starters.

Trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar the filly runs in the silks of Mohammad Umar Butt, who is rarely seen at races. This was the seventh race of a card of eight races decided in the afternoon.

Jockey Azeem Pervaiz had the distinction of scoring a double through Shah Kam and Catch All in the sixth and eighth race, respectively.

Azeem’s joy, however, proved short lived because he was held guilty of in-and-out running of his mount Shah Kam and suspended for 15 days alongwith a fine of rupees 5000. Shah Kam had finished among also ran on Sunday last.

Trainers Haji Fazal Hadi and Tanveer Aslam saddled two winners each.

Hadi sent in Minnie Me and Strings in the opener and second race while Tanveer Aslam saddled Shah Kam and Catch All in the sixth and eighth and last event of the card.

Four favourites obliged the punters while four long shots won in the eight-race card.

Meanwhile, in a related development, an overwhelming majority of race-goers on Sunday voted in favour of continuing races despite rising heat in Lahore.
