HEC approves installation of X-ray facility at govt college

ISLAMABAD, June 8: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a project for provision of X-ray diffraction facility at Government College University, Lahore.

The project was approved in a HEC’s Departmental Development Working Party meeting and it would be implemented in a period of 12 months at a cost of about Rs10 million.

The main objective of the project is to improve quality of science education and produce qualified manpower through expansion of the PhD programme.

The facility would not only enhance the research activity in different science faculties but also improve the capabilities of various research groups. All the science departments of the university will have access to the facility.

Meanwhile, the physics department faculty, engaged in different research areas including fabrication and characterization of super conductors, material sciences, and laser spectroscopy, would also benefit from the project.

X-ray diffraction is a non-destructive analytical technique for identification and quantitative determination of various phases present in solid materials.—APP
