FAISALABAD, June 7: The Water And Sanitation Agency (Wasa) suspended water supply to its over 100,000 consumers in over 100 localities without any prior information or formal notice and realizing the sizzling weather.

Wasa authorities ordered disconnection of water supply on the pretext that majority of consumers of these areas had become “chronic defaulters.”

Old people and children are the worst-hit due to suspension of water supply. People were seen running from pillar to post to get a bucket of water in scorching heat. Long queues were seen at water-pumps installed by philanthropists along the Rakh Branch Canal on Samundri Road.

A group of residents of affected colonies were fuming at Wasa’s ‘inhuman’ action and said there was no justification to suspend water supply on the plea that revenue recovery from these areas was below the target.

They alleged that Wasa authorities failed to slash their non-development expenditure and now they started targeting consumers by disconnecting their water supply connections.

They urged the president and the chief minister to take action against Wasa high-ups.

A Wasa spokesman confirmed the suspension of water supply to over 100 localities adding that the step had been taken by the high ups because the recovery from these areas was below the target. “Wasa has already been facing financial problems due to its chronic defaulters and it is not in a position to meet further financial burden,” he said.
