KARACHI: KUTS slams reduction in varsities’ allocations
KARACHI, June 6: The Karachi University Teacher’s Society (KUTS) took a serious note of the news reports that the budgetary allocations for education and science and technology have been slashed for the next financial year.
These budgetary cuts are incomprehensible in the light of enhanced development expenditure of Rs160 billion and show a continuous negative attitude of government towards education and social development, a press release stated on Friday.
The KUTS said that these cuts would have serious repercussions on the university budget for the next financial year and deplored the government promises made for the development of social sciences.
The Society demanded of the government that at least six per cent of the recurring expenditures and 10 per cent of developmental expenditure should be allocated to education. It also demanded that the government grants for universities be immediately doubled.
Meanwhile, the Execuitve Committee of KUTS resolved to hold a general body meeting on June 15 to discuss the implications of the budgetary cuts on universities particularly on Karachi University.
The council also expressed solidarity with the Ittehad-e- Asatiza Pakistan in their struggle for teachers’ rights and condemned the police brutality of June 4 in Islamabad against the protesting teachers.—PPI
