KARACHI: Rebuilding of Orangi Town roads begins: UCs given Rs620m
KARACHI, June 6: The city government Karachi has started reconstruction of two major roads of Orangi Town at a cost of Rs26.30 million.
On Thursday city Nazim Naimatullah Khan laid the foundation stone of the 52,000-feet double-track road from Nishan-i-Haider Chowk to Urdu Chowk, and the 5,000 feet of road from Khan Chowk to Urdu Chowk.
MNA Laiq Ahmed Khan, MPA Hameedullah Khan, town Nazim Shahid Alam, Nazims of union councils, councillors and area notables attended the ceremony.
Addressing the function, the city Nazim said that Orangi Town was established in 1970, but its population had remained deprived of basic amenities. The past rulers did not prepare any plan for the area which was faced with problems of sewerage, transport, water and dilapidated roads.
He said the city government had taken up works at three different levels; the towns had been given Rs15 million each, while the union councils had been given over Rs620 million for development by the city government. He added that after the completion of the ongoing schemes, people would see a visible change.
The Nazim pointed out that both the roads being reconstructed were under the town administration but the city government had decided to carry out the task.
He said that some towns, such as Lyari, Orangi, Baldia and SITE, needed a lot of development work. However, he added, full development could not be carried out because of resource constraints.
He said the development work done during the past 16 months was a lot more than what was done in the past 16 years.
“We have come only to serve the people of Karachi and will meet our commitment under all circumstances, and will keep providing facilities to the people”.
MNA Laiq Ahmed Khan, speaking on the occasion, said that construction of those roads was a gift to the people of Orangi from the city Nazim.
He alleged that conspiracies were being hatched against elected representatives.
“Their houses are being attacked and FIR are being registered”.
KORANGI HOSPITAL: The city government has started reconstruction work of the government hospital Korangi and it will be completed soon.
A city government press release said that in the first phase a 20-bed emergency ward was being constructed and 70 per cent of the work had been completed.
The city Nazim visited the hospital and inspected the development work. He expressed concerned over the low attendance of doctors and directed the EDO health to take necessary action in that regard and ensure the availability of doctors where it was necessary.
The Nazim was informed that the expenses of the emergency ward, which had already started working, amounted to Rs9 million, and in the next phase work on other units would also start.
