PORT-OF-SPAIN (Trinidad), May 27: West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara believes that the only team capable of beating the Australians record run of consecutive ODI victories at present, are the Aussies themselves.

Lara was instrumental in ending the baggy greens winning streak at 21 matches, after he guided his team to a 39 run victory in Port-of-Spain on Sunday.

The Windies skipper said that although it would be difficult to repeat the feat, he felt it was not beyond the current Aussies.

“I think Australia is in a position to do it again, hopefully not starting in Grenada,” he said.

“They have the premier team in the world in one-day cricket, but it’s going to be tough to get so many (wins) because one-day cricket is instant cricket. It’s who plays best on the day.

“It shows the quality of their team and it shows that we’ve got to try to emulate a thing such as that. Maybe not in stats, but definitely in trophies and the results they’ve got over the years.

“My boys are really in awe of their squad. They’ve got great guys, friendly guys but they’ve also got great professionals and they’re trying to win each and every step of the way,” Lara told The Australian.

Aussie captain Ricky Ponting agreed that the nature of the one-day game would indeed make it difficult for any team to put the record under threat.

“I’d like to think it would stand for a long time,” he said. “We have stretched it by a fair margin, and with one-day cricket being the game it is, it brings teams closer together.”—PPI
