US-Iran talks confirmed

AMMAN, May 12: A senior US official on Monday confirmed last week’s press reports that Iran and the United States have had “several meetings” recently to discuss Afghanistan and Iraq.

A senior US State Department official, who is accompanying Secretary of State Colin Powell on the Middle East tour, told reporters: “We have had several meetings with the Iranians in the context of the Geneva discussions that we have on Afghanistan.

“The most recent one was nine days ago approximately. We are discussing things that are important to the United States, such as Iraq,” the official said.—AFP
