KARACHI, May 12: The Sindh High Court on Monday gave the provincial government a last chance to take and intimate a decision in respect of teachers employed in the late 80s for Nai Roshni schools.

About 300 teachers recruited under a mass literacy and adult education programme launched by the Junejo government were relieved in 1991 when it was terminated by the new government. The teachers moved the court to ensure their employment. Some of them were adjusted against vacancies occurring in primary schools.

However, the government failed to take any policy decision to determine their status or guarantee their continued employment.

On the last date of hearing of their petition, a division bench, comprising Justices Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Rehmat Hussain Jafer, had asked the provincial education secretary to make a statement on the petitioners’ grievance.

The secretary failed to appear and the bench decided to give the respondent a last opportunity to clarify its position, vis-a-vis the petitioners’ employment.

Meanwhile, an election tribunal, comprising Justice Ghulam Rabbani, ordered recounting at another polling station of the provincial constituency PS-113, Karachi, at the behest of MMA candidate Khwaja Sharaful Islam.

The petitioner has challenged the election of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Akhtar Aziz Bilgrami from the constituency.
