KARACHI, May 12: Despite formation of computer labs at various city intermediate colleges, students have not yet been provided facility of internet in these labs, owing to which a majority of students are forced to go to the Internet cafes or utilize their personal computers at their residences.
In addition to making computer education mandatory for intermediate students, the Sindh education department had decided to establish computer labs and provide internet connections to facilitate students, but so far the objective could not be achieved.
Students and teachers’ bodies have expressed resentment on the purchase of outdated but costly personal computers for city colleges and now the issue is being investigated by the National Accountability Bureau.
According to an official of the Sindh education department, city intermediate colleges have been asked on various occasions to acquire Internet connections and provide the facility to students.
“At the time of setting up computer labs, colleges had been asked to establish internal networks and provide the Internet facility to faculty and students besides sharing of data”, he said and added that unfortunately, at various educational institutions, substandard computer machines were purchased, which do not support the Internet.
It is learnt that EDO Higher Education, Prof. Raees Alvi, had also asked the authorities of various intermediate colleges to acquire Internet connections and establish internal networks to facilitate students.—PPI
