Big cache of weapons seized
RAWALPINDI, May 8: Police have seized a large quantity of weapons including anti-tank and mortar guns which the police official believe were to be used in sabotage activities by activists of a banned organization.
This was disclosed by the deputy inspector general of police, Rawalpindi, Israr Ahmed, at a press conference held here on Thursday.
The DIG said the weapons were seized after the police got information from the CID department.
Following the information, a police raiding party led by the superintendent of police, Attock, was formed to intercept a truck on the GT Road, he added.
The DIG said the police party spotted an abandoned truck (DNA-9695) near Hassanabdal.
DIG Ahmed said the driver and conductor left their vehicle and slipped away from the scene, however, the truck was impounded by the police which led to the recovery of a mortar gun (60mm), 22 mortar rounds, 23 mortar primary cartridge, 65 fartring charge, an anti-tank weapon (PRG 7.5), 30 RPG-7 rounds, 25 RPG-7 booster, 31 rocket (106mm) and 30mm rocket 107.
The DIG said banned organizations are surging again with new names. The police are hunting for the truck driver and conductor who have been missing, he added.
Quoting intelligence sources, the DIG claimed that the ammunition seized by the police had to be used by the activists of banned groups for targeting government offices and public places.
To a question, the DIG said the law enforcement agencies had not been given specific task of launching crackdown on activists of the proscribed organizations.
“However, we have been monitoring the activities of banned organizations who are resurging with new names,” the DIG said.
