SA Laser Lass well-placed to land feature event
LAHORE, April 26: Laser Lass, a three-year-old chestnut English filly, owned by Khawaja M. Arif, seems well-placed in the handicap to win the Attock Oil Petroleum Limited Cup during extra Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The promising filly from Ali Royal out-of-Lingdale Lass has already won two races in-a-row so far and is on a hat trick trail. Her victories on both the occasions over shorter distance were easy, which makes her look day’s best proposition.
This time she would be going over 1600m, 200m more than the last one, but even then she should make it.
In and out performer Muqaddar, Miracle and Dizzy Height should fight for lesser remunerative berths. In all, 14 runners have accepted for this feature and seventh race, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.
In this race the owner of bay colt The Conqueror has appealed to the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards against assigning top weight of 12 stones 6 pounds to the colt.
His appeal will be heard by stewards on Sunday and a decision taken before the race.
The decision of holding once a week races had a salutary effect on the number of entries as well as races.
It has resulted in a drawing up of a lengthy card of nine events with a record 124 acceptors for the extra meeting.
Surprisingly there was a stampede of 148 entries for the handicaps and after scratching of 24 those left-in are still record highest number of entries during the last couple of years, which has surpassed the Derby Day race entries.
Strangely enough there were hardly over 50 entries during last Sunday’s races. Entry-wise it looks good to have once-a-week racing.
The supporting and fifth race, the Attock Oil Refinery Cup to be contested over 1200m looks a fight between a quartet, bay filly Glorious Song, bay horse Prime Panther, chestnut filly Flame and bay filly Morning Bird.
However, the best performance of the four has been put up by Glorious Song who should have edge over the others.
Imported filly Dock Land Diva, looks a cut above in class vis-a-vis her seven rivals in the class IV race, the Minchinabad Plate, to have gone over 1200 metres. This will be the eight race in racing order.
Dock Land Diva, a progeny of Desert Prince-out-of-Mimansa was beaten by her stablemate Laser Lass over 1400 metres on Sunday Last.
She had been leading ahead of the field throughout the race distance and was beaten at the winning post. She should make amends this time.
Her stablemate Aegean Daisy and lowly placed Super Star should fight for the places.
Five-year-old bay Thunder Storm looks a good thing in the Minchinabad Plate, class IV division II to be run over 1200 metres.
He should be followed by Key Guy Princess, My Own Business and lover’s Lady. This will be the sixth race of the day.
Four races have been set for class VII animals. The division one has 13 runners barring last-minute withdrawals while the other three, division II, III and IV have 18 acceptors each.
In these events some close finishes may be seen to the great delight of sport’s connoisseurs. The first race will be held at 1.30pm.
