Whatmore to coach BD

DHAKA, April 20: Dav Whatmore, who coached Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup, is to take charge of the Bangladesh team from May, a Bangladesh Cricket Board official said here on Sunday.

“Dav Whatmore will take over as our team’s new coach from May after his contract with Sri Lanka expires,” said the official, who did not want to be identified.

Australian Whatmore, 49, will earn US$100,000 plus other benefits, he said.

If his appointment is confirmed, Whatmore will be the national team’s seventh coach since 1990.

Whatmore also coached the Sri Lankans at the World Cup in March where he guided the team to the semifinals.

Bangladesh, who had a dismal World Cup in South Africa, were most recently coached by Pakistan’s Mohsin Kamal and Ali Zia.—AFP
