Traders hold rallies to condemn war on Iraq

By Our Staff Reporter

RAWALPINDI, April 8: Traders held rallies in different areas of the city on Tuesday to condemn the US-led attack on Iraq.

The protest rallies, joined by hundreds of businessmen, were organized by traders’ unions. The participants were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-US statements. They chanted slogans against America and called president Bush a beast. They vowed that they would boycott American products and appealed to all the people to do the same.

One of the protests, staged outside an American fast-food outlet, was led by the MNAs of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Mohammad Hanif Abbasi and Mian Aslam. About 200 people, mostly traders, participated in the protest and demanded closure of the restaurant. They asked people to boycott the restaurant.

The elected representatives, in their speeches, condemned America for its barbarous attack on innocent Iraqis.

They asked people to completely boycott American products, as it would weaken its economy. It is with this money, that the US has unleashed a reign of terror in Muslims countries. “It is the least we can do,” they said.

The also targeted the government for not openly opposing the US-led war on Iraq where innocent Muslims were being killed mercilessly. “It is a matter of great shame for our rulers,” they maintained.

Another protest rally, organized by the traders, was held at Fawara Chowk. Traders’ leaders, Sheikh Saddiq and Mr Zaidi spoke to the protesters. They expressed solidarity with the people of Iraq. “We are ready for any sacrifice for the sake of our Iraqi brethren,” they vowed and asked the government to allow them to send medicines and other necessary things for the people of Iraq.
