KARACHI: Edhi sends medicines for Iraqi people

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 2: The Edhi Foundation is sending life-saving drugs and surgical equipment worth Rs 30 lakh for the war-torn people of Iraq.

A convoy of 20 ambulances, headed by Faisal Edhi, would be leaving for Iraq via Iran some time between Wednesday and Thursday night.

Faisal Edhi told Dawn that he had discussed his route with the Iranian embassy officials and would also provide them a final list of the goods being taken by the convoy, and after the completion of formalities, they would provide us a passage through Iran.

He said the Iraqi embassy was approached in Pakistan by the Edhi Foundation and the Iraqi officials said they had been running short of the stock of life-saving drugs due to heavy casualties in war in Iraq.

“On a request by the Iraqi government, we are leaving for the war-torn country tonight”, he added.

He said the Iraqi’s health ministry officials would receive the Edhi convoy on the Iran-Iraq border and then they would lead us to Baghdad.

He said the Edhi Foundation did not approach the coalition forces to get a passage to Baghdad.

“In case, the coalition forces occupy the territory, we will ask them to give a passage to reach Baghdad”, he added.

Rizwan Edhi said in the first phase, the Edhi Foundation was sending medicines and life saving drugs for the war victims and in the second phase, food items, clothes and other necessary items would be dispatched.
