KARACHI: Nazim seeks honoraria for women councilors
KARACHI, March 29: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Saturday demanded payment of honoraria to women councillors.
Speaking at a seminar held at the Women’s Sports Complex in connection with the International Women’s Day, the Nazim praised the role played by woman councillors in Karachi, and said it had added a golden chapter in the history of Karachi.
He said he had written letters to the Sindh governor and other authorities for payment of honoraria to women councillors and UC Nazims.
Speaking on the status of women in Islam, the Nazim said that “status, respect and rights which Islam has given to woman cannot be given by any other society or religion.”
Europe, he said, had presented woman as a show-piece which is highly regrettable.
The Nazim said that a family forms the basis of a strong nation and status of women cannot be elated by separating her form rest of the family. Men and women both play a role towards the development of society and in this regard guidelines have been determined.
He said that a Muslim woman occupies a respectable position than a Western woman.
“The status of woman determined in our society is a balanced one and our society stands on equal footing”.
Naimatullah said “today the Muslim world enjoys superiority when it is the question of resources and human force and this superiority needs to be established.”
Speaking on the occasion, Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan said that women have 33 per cent representation in the local councils, but their working contribution is more than 50 per cent.
MNA Aisha Munawar, Anita Ghulam Ali, Farida Nawaz, Mangla Sharma, Musafira Jamal, Rehana Afroz, Kazi Sadruddin and Iqbal Zubaidi also spoke.
Former education minister Anita Ghulam Ali said women should have an indepth study of international situation and should upbring their children accordingly to prepare them for the future.—APP
