KARACHI, March 5: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Wednesday distributed relief cheques for Rs10,20,000 among the affectees of recent rains in the villages of Gadap Town, where five people were killed, many injured and a number of houses destroyed.

The families of the deceased were given Rs100,000 each while the injured got Rs10,000 each. Cheques for Rs20,000 each were also given to those whose houses had been damaged.

The Nazim said though the government’s resources were limited but whatever was possible, grants have been given to the affectees without delay.

The Nazims of the area and the town officials were also present.

Meanwhile, Thomas Carl Press, chief of a German firm — Deugro Carl E. Press Holding Gmbll and Company — called on the City Nazim on Wednesday.

A statement said that Naimatullah Khan assured Mr Thomas of the city government’s full support in the company’s intentions to invest in the city, with a special emphasis on the transport sector.

Bachat bazaars: In an effort to chalk out a uniform policy, the city government plans to begin a campaign for monitoring the weekly ‘bachat’ bazaars.

During the campaign, licence for holding ‘bachat’ bazaars, complaint centres, reception desks, documents, balances/ weight machines, display of price lists, and sanitation arrangements will be checked.

As notified on Wednesday, district officers of the city government will pay visits to all such bazaars in the course of their campaign.

The city government’s department of enterprise and investment is performing a functional role under SLGO 2001 and its functions include the determination and control of prices, holding of weekly bazaars and their monitoring.

Food samples: A team of food inspectors of the health department, city government, collected 30 food samples from Jodia Bazar and sent to the Food Laboratory for a chemical analysis.

Further legal action will be taken after the receipt of laboratory reports and in accordance with their findings, a press release said on Wednesday.

The EDO for health has appealed to the people to cooperate with the city government in curbing adulteration in food so that this nefarious business could be discouraged.—PPI/APP
