KARACHI, March 4: Expressing resentment over transfers being made in the city government and the police department without his consent, the city Nazim Naimatullah Khan has cautioned that all development works being carried out in the city will come to halt if uncalled for interference continued in the affairs of the city government.
Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated Old Exhibition roundabout on Tuesday, the Nazim expressed the hope that like the Sindh governor and the chief minister who had been extending full cooperation to the city government, the Sindh chief secretary and others would also cooperate with him in the interest of the city.
The Nazim said that the city government took up the Old Exhibition’s project on a priority basis to eliminate the huge roundabout which had been the root cause of traffic bottlenecks at this juncture as over 300,000 vehicles pass through it daily.
He hoped that with the improvement and upgradation of roads and pavements at the roundabout, there would be no hindrance now in the flow of traffic and motorists would heave a sigh of relief.
The work on the roundabout has been completed at a cost of Rs 39.209 million and the work includes carpeting of roads, covering an area of 345433 square feet, pavements 42,998 running feet and installation of 27 traffic signals, was commenced on Sept 27, 2002 and was completed on Feb 26, 2003.
Referring to the development works being carried by the city government, he said that work on improvement of other roundabouts, situated at Guru Mandir, North Nazimabad’s Five-Star, Nagan Chowrangi, Banaras and Jauhar More would be accomplished soon, while work on two flyovers at FTC and Sharea Faisal was going on in full swing.
About the Dalmia Road (from Drive-Inn cinema to National Stadium), he said the road was being converted into a double carriage to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.
Lauding the city government’s officials, Nazims of towns and union councils for speedily undertaking development works in their respective jurisdictions, he said all of them who were working with team spirit would shortly make Karachi a beautiful and peaceful city of the country if the local government institutions were provided more funds.
In his welcome address, Jamshed Town’s Nazim, Ahmed Qasim Parekh, congratulated the Nazim for taking up the roundabout’s upgradation work in a short span of four months.
The city government’s executive district officers (works and services) and (transport) departments, Brig (Retd) Zaheer Quadri and Dr Tahir Soomro, respectively, were also present.
