KARACHI, Feb 20: A large number of women and children belonging to the fishing community staged a demonstration to protest against the deep-sea fishing policy on Thursday.

The demonstration was organized by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum at the Karachi Press Club. The protesters demanded that the deep-sea fishing policy be abolished as the deep-sea trawlers were wiping out entire fish stock in the region.

Criticizing the policy they said that certain vested interests were ruining the future of the fishing industry in the country.

They were also chanting slogans in support of their demands.

Some of the slogans were: “deep-sea trawlers are death trap”; “deep-sea fishing policy is the message of death for the children of fishermen”; “ deep-sea fishing licences be cancelled” and “ do not destroy our future for your greed.”

The demonstrators were also carrying banners with their demands written on them.
