KARACHI, Feb 19: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that a committee of educational experts is being set up to work out proposals for improving the academic environment in educational institutions in Karachi and to raise the standard of education.
He stated this while inaugurating a modern library at Amna Mumtaz Happy School, Nazimabad, on Wednesday.
Former Sindh education minister, Anita Ghulam Ali, Begum Khadija Soomro and others were also present.
The Nazim stressed the need for establishment of more libraries and called for cooperation of private sector with donation of books.
He said that conscientious people should launch a campaign for promoting reading habits because the city government due to its limited resources cannot meet the needs of this ever-growing city.
The Nazim said that the City government is keen to promote education in Karachi and we have allocated a big chunk of our budget for education.
He pointed out that libraries have been established in towns and educational institutions, but still they are short of requirements and their number needs to be increased.
He observed that internet cafes are pushing the youth away from books which is not appropriate for the society and the city government is considering starting an action against this social evil as it is wasting the time of youth.
Addressing the function, Anita Ghulam Ali said the name of people who helped in the establishment of libra-ries will be written in golden letters.
She emphasised that there should be a compulsory period of library in schools so that the children could benefit from books.
