The Conqueror claims Derby Trials

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Feb 16: Four-year-old bay colt, The Conqueror proved worth his name when he outclassed his six rivals to land the Derby Trials run over 2000m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The three to two joint favourite The Conqueror was second behind the leader Raqeeb-i-Azam, a raider from Karachi, in the early part of the race with Red Ransom, Democracy following in the same order. The positions remained unchanged till two furlongs from the winning post when Raqeeb-i-Azam suddenly slowed his pace and his rider held the colt for a while but he picked up again and led the field. In the meantime The Conqueror burst into speed alongwith Red Ransom and both passed the leader to finish in the same order.

The Conqueror won by one-and-a-half lengths from Red Ransom, who spared three and a three-fourth of a length over favourite Raqeeb-i-Azam. Paddock Fancy finished fourth, eight lengths further away. In all seven colts and fillies ran for the event.

Owned by Syed Tasweer Hussain Shah and trained by Sohail Aziz The Conqueror clocked two minutes 9 1/5 seconds over the distance. Sunday’s win has made the colt favourite for the Pakistan Derby to be held early next month. This was the fifth race of the day.

Bay filly Theatre’s Breeze stormed home to win the Bin Qasim Cup, a term race for three-year-old colts and fillies run over 1200 metres.

She beat another bay filly Freedom Dancer by two and three- quarters of a length as she liked. Bay colt Muqaddar finished third another four lengths behind while Blu’s Traveller, a highly reputed bay colt from Karachi made up the frame to a total disappointment of his connections. Only six took the start. Jockey Salah-ud-Din II rode the winner owned by Raja Sher Mohammad Khan, a stud owner from Faisalabad.
