FAISALABAD, Feb 15: A boy attempted suicide by cutting his jugular vein under mysterious circumstances at the Rescue-15 centre of the Khurrianwala police station, some 17km from here on Saturday.

Police said the boy came to the Rescue 15 centre and raised an alarm that some people were chasing to kill him. Suddenly, he whipped out a knife from his pocket and tried to cut his jugular vein. He bled profusely and fell on the ground. He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital where his condition was described as critical. He was identified as Muhammad Hanif, son of villager Abdul Hameed, Chak 93-RB.

Relatives of Hanif said he was present at a panchayat for proving himself innocent in a cattle-theft case. Refuting his claim, some villagers overpowered Hanif and set off to hand him over to area police.

They refuted the claim of police and villagers that Hanif had tried to take his life.

The muharrar said the condition of Hanif was too critical to make any statement.

GOVERNOR: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool will preside over the Senate session of the University of Agriculture on Feb 17.

Treasurer Azhar Latif will also present the 2002-2003 annual budget before the session for approval. Later, the governor will also visit different departments of the university and inspect educational and research facilities being provided to students.
