Resolution moved for new NFC award formula

PESHAWAR, Feb  6: Deputy speaker of the NWFP Assembly, Ikram Ullah Shahid, on Thursday moved a resolution in the assembly secretariat, seeking distribution of resources among the provinces and the federation on the basis of a new formula from July 1.

Mr Shahid of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has also demanded that a new National Finance Commission (NFC) should be constituted for the purpose.

The resolution demanded for ensuring transparency in the preparation of accounts of the federal taxes, service charges, general sales tax and the federal divisible pool. The federation should transfer 45 per cent of the total resources to the provinces, it added.

The mover suggested that the resources among the provinces and the federal government should be distributed on the 45:55 basis— a stand adopted by the last military-backed civilian government of the province.

He said that direct federal transfers to the provinces envisaged under the 1997 NFC award should be continued under the new award.—Bureau
