LONDON, Feb 6: Britain is deploying a total of 100 war planes backed by about 7,000 personnel to the Gulf and Turkey in preparation for possible military action against Iraq, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said Thursday.

Britain would also deploy 27 Puma and Chinook helicopters over the next few weeks, Hoon told parliament.

“Time is running out. The Iraqi regime must decide whether it will comply with its obligations or face the consequences,” he said, announcing the deployment.

Britain already has 25 planes and 1,000 troops in the Gulf region patrolling Iraqi no-fly zones.

The latest deployment includes E3D Sentry aircraft; Jaguar and Tornado reconnaissance aircraft; VC10 and Tristar refuelling aircraft; and Hercules transporters.

Tornado F3, Tornado GR4 and Harrier GR7 fighter planes will provide the offensive capability, Hoon said, describing the force as “balanced and highly capable.”

“It is still possible for (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein to change his behaviour, cooperate actively with the weapons inspectors and disarm by peaceful means,” said the defence secretary.—AFP
