KARACHI: Police kill suspect in encounter in PIB

KARACHI, Feb 4: A suspected bandit was shot dead in PIB Colony on Tuesday, in what the police claimed an encounter.

The police said four armed men robbed a salesman of a private distribution company, Majeed, of Rs7,000 and also snatched the pistol of the security guard.

The bandits tried to escape by opening fire on the company’s vehicle. A police mobile of PIB police station, stationed near by, rushed to the spot.

The bandits ran into narrow streets of PIB Colony while opening fire at the police.

The police returned the fire killing one of suspects on the spot. His three accomplices escaped.

The police claimed to have recovered two pistols from the possession of the dead suspect.

They also claimed to have recovered a pistol that was snatched from a security guard in a similar robbery on Jan 7 in the same locality.

The body of the dead suspect was sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for autopsy. Later, he was identified as Arif, resident of Ghausia Colony. The police said the suspect’s mother identified the body at the hospital.

ACCIDENTS: A young man died in a road accident at Malir in the morning.

The police said Nasir Mahmood, aged 26, was hit by a speeding vehicle while walking across the main Sharea Faisal near Malir Halt.

He was rushed to the JPMC where he died.

The driver of the unidentified vehicle sped off after the accident.

KILLED: A palmist was shot dead at Saddar in the evening.

The police said Mohammed Zahid alias Bangali had a shop at Al-Burhan Centre in Saddar where he plied his trade of palmistry.

On Tuesday evening, two unidentified men came to the shop and told the shop assistant to got out for a while.

They pumped two bullets into Zahid’s head and chest and escaped.

Quoting the shop assistant, Basharat, the police said Zahid had a dispute with unknown persons over the shop.

The two men visited the shop in the recent past also.

The police said Zahid’s brother in-law Khalid Bangali had a similar palmist shop at Rainbow Centre and his father-in-law, Prof Ajmairi, had a shop at Numaish.

The family hailed from Gujranwala and add Bangali to their names.

The body was sent to the JPMC for autopsy.

The police suspected personal enmity to be a possible motive for the killing.

DIES OF BURNS: A young girl died of burns in a hospital.

The police said Shumaila, aged 17, suffered burns while working in a kitchen at her house in Bhitaiabad in the airport police limits.

She was admitted to Civil Hospital where she died. She was a student of Class VII.

A young man was run over by a train near Landhi railway station.

The police said Mansab Khan, aged 35, was run over by the train while walking across the railway tracks.

The body was sent to the JPMC for post-mortem.
