Asian Junior squash from today

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Four Pakistani boys will be in action in the individual event of the 11th Asian Junior Squash Championships that open here Sunday with Bilal Zaman taking on Sea Ang of Singapore and Basit Ashfaq facing India’s Ritesh Sharma.

Other two home players on show will be Karamat Ullah who will be playing Sri Lankan Shezan Zahir and Aqib Hanif meeting Singapore’s Low Cher Heang.

In all there are eight matches scheduled for the opening day in the men’s individual event while the girls competition will see four ties being played.

Pakistan’s Alia Sarfraz has been drawn to meet Hong Kong’s Natalie So with Sarah Awan facing off Malaysia’s Sheeny Ong and Maria Toor playing another Malaysian Sally Lani.

Seven countries - Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and hosts Pakistan are taking part in the championship that will conclude with the team event final on February 8.

The Roshan Khan Squash Complex meanwhile was a busy place Saturday with almost all the teams practicing. Security in and around the venue is tight and the players are escorted by commandos wherever they go.

A meeting of the team managers meanwhile was also held in Rawalpindi in which the tournament director Air Commodore Munawar Alam briefed the officials on the rules and regulations for the championship.

Boys individual: Saleem Fayez Muhammed (Kuw) v Kavin Jaynsardana (SL); Karamat Ullah (Pak) v Shezan Zahir (SL); Bilal Zaman (Pak) v Sea Ang (Sing); Fabion F. (Mal) v Manjit Weersuriya (SL); Sandeep Jangera (Ind) v Ali Bader Al Ramezi (Kuw); Aqib Hanif (Pak) v Low Cher Heang (Sing); Anson Kwing (HK) v Vinayak Shetty (Ind); Basit Ashfaq (Pak) v Ritesh Sharma (Ind).

Girls individual: Nirasha Guruge (SL) v Au Wing Chi (HK); Sarah Awan (Pak) v Shanni Ong (Mal); Alia Sarfraz (Pak) v Natalie So (HK); Maria Toor Pakay (Pak) v Sally Lani (Mal).
