‘Wasim best I ever played’
CAPE TOWN, Feb 1: There is another incentive to motivate Allan Donald even further in his fourth and last World Cup — and that is to become the man who has taken most wickets in the tournament.
The 36-year old fast bowler has already taken 37 World Cup wickets and is only six behind the man currently in the lead, Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, who has 43 scalps to his name.
However, Wasim also 36, has played in 10 more World Cup matches (32) than Donald (22).
Donald expressed surprise that he was so close to Wasim whom he regards as the most skilful bowler he has ever encountered in world cricket.
“Apart from being an incredibly mean bowler, he also has the ability to swing the ball like nobody else. He is without a doubt the best bowler I have ever played against.
“It will be quite a challenge to me to overtake him as the top wicket taker in World Cup. One never knows. If you start off well with four wickets and from there on take an average of two in other matches nothing would be impossible.
“However, Wasim would be just as motivated to stay ahead. You have to envy the ease of his action. It almost seems as if he wastes no energy when bowling,” he said.
The other fast bowlers of his time held in high regard by Donald are Glenn McGrath and the West Indians Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose.—PPI
