Sanitary staff demand payment of dues
GUJRANWALA, Jan 25: The sanitary workers of the City Tehsil Council demanded on Saturday payment of their outstanding dues.
They held a demonstration outside the city tehsil council office and chanted slogans in favour of their demand. Led by labour union leaders Dr. W. Shafiq and Wahid Iqbal Butt, they also marched around the office.
Naib Nazim Mirza Jahangir Baig and health sub-committee convener Noman Khokhar informed the sanitary workers that recommendations had been forwarded for the release of their outstanding dues. But the sanitary workers refused to call off their protest till the payment of their dues.
The tehsil municipal officer (TMO) contacted City Nazim Babu Javaid Ahmad by phone and apprised him of the situation. The City Nazim approved payment of the dues but the city tehsil council account office said that the payment of the dues would be made on Monday.
The sanitary workers dispersed after deciding that they would again take out a procession if their dues were not cleared on Monday.
BAIL REJECTED: Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanaullah Niazi rejected on Saturday the bail application of a transport association general secretary Tariq Butt.
Mr Butt has been involved in the smuggling of 6,000 kilogrammes of poppy from Afghanistan by a truck.
According to details, a Customs intelligence squad intercepted at upper Chenab near Wazirabad some few days ago and recovered 6,000 kilogrammes of poppy from it. The poppy was being smuggled from Afghanistan. Tariq Butt had escaped from the spot and later got an interim bail from a court of law.
Meanwhile, the bail applications of two men impersonating naib tehsildar and patwari were rejected on Saturday by Anti-Corruption Court Judge Pervez Mahmood Mian.
According to details, Muhammad Akram and Nazir Ahmad of Mandi Bahauddin received Rs20,000 from Munir Ahmad, Shabir Ahmad and Ghulam Rasool of Phalia for the transfer of an agriculture land in their name by tempering with the revenue record.
On a complaint, the anti-corruption establishment booked them in corruption case. But they got an interim bail from a court of law.
Police arrested them from the court room and sent them to jail.
