FAISALABAD, Jan 22: Hundreds of industrial workers took out a procession here on Wednesday in protest against violation of labour laws in factories.
The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands. Some of them were beating their chests against the government failure in implementing labour laws in industrial units.
They marched on different city roads and reached the Clock Tower intersection where trade union leaders in their speeches urged the government to withdraw the IRO-2002 in the larger interest of the labour force.
They said the labourers had already been facing financial constraints due to price hike and increase in tariffs of electricity and gas. Scores of families of daily-wage earners had reached on the verge of starvation, they said.
They demanded that the Labour Welfare Department should be taken over by the Punjab government and separated from the district government. They said all vacant seats in the department should also be filled so that the required strength could work for the implementation of labour laws.
They also criticized the role of the agencies concerned in approving marriage and death grants besides pension cases of labourers.
They urged the government to increase salaries of industrial workers besides regularization of their services.
