Najib’s last-gasp goal settles issue

LAHORE, Jan 20: A last-gasp goal by Arslan Najib helped Gulf Pak to beat EPCOT 6-5 in the opening match of the Punjab Cup polo on Monday.

EPCOT made a flying start scoring two goals in the first chukker one each through Hissam Ali Haider and Umar Sadik to gain 2-0 lead.

The winners struck back in the second chukker, scoring three goals in a row to surge ahead 3-2, however, EPCOT restored the parity before the chukker ended.

Gulf Pak, got their first goal through Ahmad Ali Tiwana and second from Omer Minhas before Arslan banged home his first goal to make it 3-2. Hissam equalised 3-3 with his second goal for the losers.

Both teams scored two goals each in the third chukker to make it 5-5. Minhas and Ahmad Ali scored a goal each for Gulf while Hissam and Umar scored for the losers.

In the fourth chukker Arslan converted the 30-yards penalty to slam in the match-winner.

Earlier, Green Fuels defeated Rangers 5 1/2-4 in the High Mount Junior Cup polo tournament which also started on Monday.

Feroze Gulzar, Azam Hayat Noon and Tanvir Tariq scored a goal each for the winners who had a 2 1/2 goal handicap.

For Rangers, Yaqoob Sial and Nasir Ahmad Khan scored two goals each.
