KARACHI, Jan 12: The director-general, Civil Aviation Authority, Air Marshal Saleem Arshad, has said that human factors have emerged as a ‘deciding factor’ not only in civil aviation but also in the corporate world.

“Eighty per cent of all civil aviation-related accidents were caused by human factors,” he said at the certificate distribution ceremony for 20 inspectors of the directorate of flight standards, safety investigation board and the directorate of airworthiness at the conclusion of a two-day crew resource management workshop.

Captain Amjad H. Faizi, chief executive of the Institute of Safety and Human Factors, facilitated the workshop held at the Civil Aviation Club House at the Karachi Airport.

Among others, the workshop was attended by AVM Arshad Sethi, deputy director-general CAA and faculty members of the ISHF.

DG CAA vowed that he would improve technical and operational standards and make efforts to enhance existing level of interactive relationship with all the scheduled airlines and other operators.

He stressed that airlines should strive for strengthening the CAA by their strict adherence to standard operating procedures.

On the flight safety performance of the national flag-carrier, Capt Faizi said that the developing world flew only 16 per cent of flights but had 70 per cent of all fatal accidents.

“This is a topsy-turvy ratio and needs very involved scrutiny by all the developing world airlines,” he added.—APP
