PC sales in India up

NEW DELHI, Jan 11: India’s IT hardware industry said on Friday it had registered sales of 950,000 personal computers in the period March to September 2002, an 18 per cent growth over the same period in 2001.

The Manufacturers Association of Information Technology, the country’s main IT hardware body, said that it was revising its earlier projection of 15 per cent sales growth for the financial year ending March 2003 to 20 per cent.

“With the sales in the second half expected to be higher than the first by 11 per cent, the current fiscal year is headed to be the best so far for personal computer sales in India,” the body said in a statement.

It said the growth has been driven by higher demand from the telecommunications and the service sector as well as purchases by government departments.—AFP
