KARACHI, Jan 9: An accountability court deferred on Thursday judgment in a reference against a Wapda clerk, prosecuted for amassing over Rs15 million assets through illegal means during a period of five years.

Judge Mohammed Jawaid Alam of the AC-4, who is also the administrative judge of all the ACs in Karachi division, fixed Saturday for the announcement of judgment.

According to the prosecution, Qurban Ali Jatoi, a clerk at Wapda’s field stores in Larkana, raised assets and property in the names his family members through corruption and by illegal means.

The property and assets of the accused included 40 acres of agricultural land at Vikia Sangi, Taluka Larkana, Sapna Inn Hotel on Station Road in Larkana, Sapna Ice Factory, Sindhu Ice Factory, Naveed/Sapna Rice Mill, a house on 7,000 square yards and another on 1,200 square yards in Larkana, a house on 4,500 square yards on Mai Kolachi Road, Karachi, and flats on land measuring 1,400 square feet on Station Road, Larkana.

The properties and assets were bought in the name of his sons Mushtaq Ali Jatoi, Maula Bux Jatoi, Zahid Ali Jatoi and Karim Bux Jatoi, and his daughter-in-law Badshahzadi, wife of Mushtaq Ali Jatoi.

The assets and property, raised by the accused in his and in others’ names, were allegedly found grossly disproportionate to legal and known sources of his income.

He was charged with the offence of corruption and corrupt practices, as defined in section 9 of the National Accountability Bureau Act.

SHAUKAT MIRZA MURDER CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off to Monday the hearing of Shaukat Mirza murder case against the chief of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi and his two associates.

Judge Khan Pervaiz Chang, who is holding the trial inside the Central Prison, Karachi, recorded the statement of a prosecution witness, DSP Mohammed Amir.

The court reserved the cross-examination of the prosecution witness by defence counsel M. R. Syed.

Akram Lahori, the self-styled chief of the banned sectarian outfit, Ataullah, and Azam are being tried for killing the managing director of Pakistan State Oil on July 26, 2001 in the limits of Frere police.

BOMB BLAST CASE: Judge Feroze Mehmood Bhatti of the ATC-2 adjourned the hearing of a bomb blast case against a worker of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi.

The judge, who is conducting the trial inside the Central Prison, Karachi, fixed Monday for the next hearing of the case after recording the statement of investigation officer Sub-inspector Abdur Rauf.

Mohammed Ahmed Daniyal has been charged with planting two explosive devices in a building, where members of the Ismaili community were holding a function of their spiritual leader. One of the devices exploded, injuring a few people and damaging some motorcycles.

The Pirabad police had initially registered the case against unknown culprits on December 13, 2001.

According to the prosecution, the Harkat worker, arrested on July 16, 2002, during interrogation disclosed his involvement in the bomb blast.
