Govt committed to rehabilitation of special people: Nilofar

ISLAMABAD, Jan 7: Rehabilitation of people with disabilities is the prime objective of government’s policy and programmes for special persons and efforts will be made to absorb them in the mainstream educational, recreational and employment opportunities.

This was stated by the adviser to prime minister on social welfare and special education, Nilofar Bakhtiar, while visiting the Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE) and various training centres of the ministry of women development, social welfare and special education on Tuesday.

The adviser also attended a briefing on special education institutions and National Trust for Disabled (NTD). She visited the Al-Farabi Centre for Physically Handicapped and National Training Centre for Special Persons (NTCSP).

She was informed about the existing educational and rehabilitation facilities available in the institutes.

At the NTCSP, the disabled persons are being trained in skills such as computers, machine knitting, embroidery, stitching, painting and preparations of decorative items.

Currently there are 120 students in eight traits; 26 students in computers, 10 in knitting, 10 in tailoring, six in electrical, 13 in carving, 11 in bamboo craft and 20 in arts and crafts.

The adviser was informed that all the persons, who received training, are well employed. One of the computer literate is receiving Rs60,000 per month, while a student, Khawar, is working in Germany as a computer instructor.

The disabled children, who are being trained in stitching and knitting, expressed the desire of holding stalls at Sunday and Friday markets.

The adviser assured all possible help in marketing of the products made by the special persons and facilitating them in employment opportunities.

She appreciated the supportive and assistive facilities at the Al-Farabi Centre. She visited the departments of physiotherapy and speech therapy and was informed that apart from the school students, people from outside also visit the centre for therapeutic purpose. Ms Nilofar also listened to songs presented by special persons and stressed the need to further polish the talents of the children.

She was informed that the DGSE was operating 58 educational and training centres in the country catering to various disabilities. Many innovative projects are in the process of completion such as declaring Islamabad as disability friendly city, establishing a disabilities hostel in Islamabad, a special park at Fatima Jinnah Park, and providing recreational facilities to special persons.
