HYDERABAD, Dec 29: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture will urge the government to take action if the growers were paid below the government rate for sugarcane by the sugar mills.
This was decided at an urgent meeting of the SCA, held here and presided over by Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah.
The participants of the meeting decided to advise sugarcane growers to send their receipts to the chamber if they were paid less than Rs43 per 40kg for their sugarcane crop by the sugar mills.
The meeting welcomed the constitution of a committee by the prime minister for recommending a relief package for the agriculture sector.
It recommended that the support price of the next wheat crop should be raised from Rs300 per 40kg to Rs350 per 40kg, and called for waiving the outstanding agricultural loans.
The meeting also urged the committee to announce a new package for growers to grant relief regarding agricultural loans.
Another recommendation, fielded by the chamber, called for lowering the mark-up rate on agricultural loans to seven per cent.
It fixed the date for the next meeting of the Federation of Chamber of Agriculture in Multan at Feb 22-23.
The prime minister would be requested to inaugurate the two-day conference.
The federal ministers for agriculture, finance, commerce, industries and production, water and power as well as the chief minister of Punjab are also expected to attend the meeting.
DEMO: The activists of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), Jamshoro, and several villagers staged a token hunger strike at the Jamshoro railway crossing on Friday.
They were protesting against the proposed demolition of four villages — Suffer Khaskheli, Jam Suleman Sumo, Mehram Khaskheli, and Malah Goth — by the Petaro Cadet College administration.
Talking to newsmen, the senior vice chairman of the JSMM, Samiullah Kalhoro, alleged that the administration of the college was trying to demolish the villages at Jamshoro.
He said that the army wanted to construct an air force base in the area by demolishing the old villages of Sindh.
